I’ve never been to Hawaii and never had a clue what Hawaiian food really was except it seemed to have Japanese influence. While not quite able to go all the way to Hawaii I did make it to Beach Bum in North Adelaide. Serving up predominantly Hawaiian food, these guys were the first to bring Poké Bowls to Adelaide back when they opened. Our night went a little something like this beginning with Kona Brewing Co. (Hawaii) Island IPA.
As usual I’d get a taco and a ceviché of some sort. Up on the specials board was Pork Belly Taco with tabasco mayo, Korean BBQ sauce and guacamole. All ingredients amazing in my book however when the dish came out, I thought it lacked….pork. Would’ve liked to see more meat, otherwise flavours were ok. Crackling was on point!
Salmon Ceviche was up next with raw Tasmanian salmon, grapefruit, avocado, corn and basil. They used turmeric lime dressing for extra fragrance. A fresh and delicious dish though not one for the tangy sensitive people.
Not one to ever order Fish Burger, we did here purely because their previous menu item of seared tuna burger was incredible. They’ve done it again, these guys really know how to do a fish burger. Hot off the fryer, crispy batter and buttery fish served with sundried tomatoes, chipotle mayo, bacon, cheese, guacamole and lettuce on a brioche bun. I have decided to order a fish burger every time it’s on their menu (probably always).
Another blackboard special was Beef Brisket Bowl boasting more of a Korean flavour profile. The beef brisket was tender and well marinated but perhaps they overdid the saltiness there. Coupled with the pickled carrot and daikon plus the sauce that goes over the top we found ourselves constantly reaching for that glass of water.
I do love duck but hardly order it. It’s a strong meat to work with and as much as confit duck leg is great that’s practically what everyone does. Sad to say, not my favourite way to have duck either. This Crispy Ginger Duck Leg didn’t disappoint, the skin was indeed crispy with fried grated ginger that wasn’t overpowering at all. Meat was still tender and the salad it came with balanced the rich duck well. It came on a bed of charred pineapple, cucumber, apple, mint, chilli and sesame salad.
Oh and here’s a picture of their Tuna Poke Bowl for old time’s sake. This was from a previous visit and I’ve been hooked on Poke bowls ever since. For the colours, the freshness and the fact that it’s making me eat my veges. It keeps the meal interesting with so many textures and bursts of fresh flavours.
This is our third visit to Beach Bum and all I can say is you have to at least try the Fish Burger on the menu and a Poke Bowl. Depending on what you like, I’d even say go the Coconut Chicken Salad or Coffee Beef. Vibe is always relaxed and chill there, just like a tropical paradise. Oh, and if you fancy a refreshing drink the shaved ice cocktails look mighty fine!
