Ever since my trip to Wellington and a visit to Fidel’s I have been searching for a good Cuban sandwich in Adelaide. Mind you I found this some time ago and only just had the time to write about it now. Since then I also found a couple more awesome Cuban sandwich spots but I digress. Hermanos Cubanos my friend, is a place you must visit. A hole in the wall sandwich joint, blink and you might miss it but don’t let the size fool you. The food that comes out of this kitchen is AMAZING.
It was a hot day so drinks were on our minds first. Mint Iced Tea was a special that day, how refreshing. Sugar free as well, perfect!
We were here for the sandwiches but the sound of Turmeric Beer Battered Butterfish piqued our interest. It was a good choice. Lovely subtle aroma of turmeric with a beautiful golden crispy batter. The fish was tender and buttery, definitely not overcooked like many places.
We ordered one classic Cubano and a Hermano. Must be the specialty if it forms the name of the shop right. Cubano is filled with mojo pork, smoked ham, Swiss cheese, American mustard and dill pickles. It is a good hearty sandwich with punchy full flavours. The melted Swiss cheese is pure bliss and every bite is complete. The same could be said for Hermano which is filled with Jerk chicken, avocado salsa, Swiss cheese and chipotle aioli. This is definitely not a boring sandwich and it is by no means bland, cold nor tiresome to eat. I feel like I want to go to Cuba just to eat sandwiches now.
Seating is quite limited here, it’s more of a grab and go place but there’s plenty of room to sit somewhere on Henley Square or along the beach so go on and pretend you’re in Havana. I highly recommend Hermanos Cubanos so get yourself there if you haven’t already!
