Little NNQ is a place we’ve passed many times and it always looks full. An offshoot of the original Nghi Ngan Quan in Woodville, this place has fast become a popular dining spot the restaurants filled Gouger Street. Everytime I think of having Vietnamese food I only ever seek out Pho or Bun Bo Hue so it was a bit different ordering dishes that night.
I still couldn’t resist a hot bowl of pho so a Beef Noodle Soup entrée kept this little camper happy. We also ordered Sticky Rice with Chinese Sausage and Pork Floss. Though I’m not normally a fan of sticky rice I love pork floss and the sweet Chinese sausage that’s ever so bad for cholesterol.
Mr Foodie’s favourite dish of the night was a sweet and savoury Caramelised Pork Belly. Ours was certainly tender with a lovely caramelised flavour, a little on the sweet side for me but hey, the name of the dish says it all. My favourite part was actually the egg. I have a thing for braised eggs – tea egg, soy egg, herbal egg you name it.
Tamarind Fried Snapper also made the cut tonight. Quite like a sweet and sour pork dish but better, much better. Battered fillets of snapper fried till crispy and coated in this delicious well balanced sauce. I like the flavour of tamarind, perhaps it comes from my background but tamarind over sugared vinegar any day.
Can I also just note that being a herb maniac I loved the sprigs of coriander in every dish we had tonight. There’s something about that fresh fragrant herb that freshens my palate. I can’t vouch for authenticity as my time in Vietnam was short and spent eating different things but it was an enjoyable meal. I think I need to come back for some lunch specials.
