Winter is here! Coal Cellar + Grill have launched a Winter Food & Wine Series which I believe will appeal to all meat and wine lovers out there. Known for their impressive menu from the grill, this series will showcase that and more with pairings of a different meat and wine theme each month. We were lucky enough to be invited to kick it off with June’s Pork & Pinot.
There are three pork dishes to choose from on the menu along with a choice of three pinot wines selected by their sommelier. The first to arrive was the Coal Grilled Pork Cutlet served with double cream potato, prosciutto wrapped asparagus and piquant sauce. This was followed by my favourite of the night – Pork Ribs. They were really tender and delicious done in Chipotle BBQ American style with ranch dressing slaw and thick cut Texan chips. Quite the feast. We were served a full rack (as shown in picture) as we were sharing. The normal portion is a half rack which is still a decent serve!
The last dish to come out was Pork Belly Asian style. Slow braised for 12 hours with honey, ginger and soy sauce, served with Asian greens and pork crackling.
You’ve seen the pork now here’s the pinot. You are more than welcome to pick just one of the wines but know that they are doing a Pinot Noir Wine Flight for $33 if you wish to sample all three. We started with the 2014 Henschke ‘Giles’ Pinot Noir from our very own Adelaide Hills. Next came the 2012 Kooyong Estate Pinot Noir from our neighbouring Eastern State. The final pour was a lovely 2015 Felton Road ‘Bannockburn’ Pinot Noir from Central Otago, New Zealand. This was undoubtedly my favourite with a fuller bodied flavour and cinnamon spice. Perfect for winter!
Pork & Pinot menu is currently running till 30th of June. This will then be followed by Beef & Barossa in July where there will be a good opportunity to try some rare beef cuts including the 9+ marble score Wagyu fillet.
