We all know Woodstock Winery for their wines and perhaps some of us have attended a wedding there but did you know they do some pretty yummy wood oven pizzas? For years my friends have been telling me about their Friday pizza nights. Finally I bit the bullet and went there on a double date. As soon as I arrived I could smell pizzas. Walking up to the restaurant entrance I spotted a nice hot cozy looking wood fired oven outside. This is where the magic happens.
These pizza Fridays also come with live music and we got front row seats. Probably a bit too loud for conversation but the live music was nice ambiance. Wine and beer are available for purchase while food comes as one package only tonight. For $35 you get a share platter to start with, all you can eat pizza (yes we can eat a lot) and something sweet to finish. The share platter was a good way to start as we warmed up our appetites for those pizzas. Some olives, relish, bread, cheese and paté had us settled in right away.
So, pizza time! There are three types of pizza on the menu namely Pumpkin, Funghi and Ham Margherita. We ordered one of each so we could decide which ones to keep going back to. They come as approximately 9″ pizzas, thin base with just the right amount of topping. Not overloaded nor too bare. Thin base is a big tick for me, also means better pizza to topping ratio and not filling up on greasy oily dough like you would at a Pizza Hut all-you-can-eat. My favourite of the night ended up being the Funghi pizza but I was happy with all of them really. Despite eating possibly 6 times more slices than I should have, I didn’t feel heavy or bloated. This is some magical pizza base. Another Funghi please!
To finish the night, dessert was a simple chocolate ice cream on dirt with mixed berries. Just a little sweetness to finish the night.
Being a proud supporter of SA foods, it was good to know Woodstock used locally sourced ingredients. All the better. I’ve heard it also gets pretty cozy in there over winter. If you are planning on doing this be sure to book ahead as seating is limited.
