Sometimes it pays to look outside the cafe filled strips in central hubs on the hunt for gems like Mister Sunshine. Quietly tucked away on George Street in Thebarton this place is a breath of fresh air in this industrial section. First thing I noticed was the staff were vibrant. Just like rays of sunshine. I usually try to dine outside for fresh air and they have a lovely outdoor area surrounded by greenery. Perfect for me, perfect for my dog. Oh yes, I brought my dog. Extra super bonus points for being dog friendly!
Did I mention the staff are great? Wicket got some bacon. Not a biscuit treat or anything. He got bacon. What a spoilt pooch. No wonder he wanted to follow her around.
We came here for a late brunch mostly because I’ve been wanting to try it for a while. The furniture and servingware leans towards retro and re-purposed type of stuff but that’s all trendy now right? We both opted for a pot of tea eac this morning and I rather loved my tea pot. Seemingly small and looking the same size as the cup, it magically held more liquid than I thought. Maybe theres’ a genie in there.
Mister Foodie had the classic Bacon and Egg Sandwich served on thick sourdough toast with roasted tomatoes, rocket and chilli jam for that gourmet taste. Egg yolk was still runny, a simple nice sandwich with good ingredients.
I on the other hand went towards the lunch side ordering a Spiced Chicken Breast Burger. It’s free range chicken breast and it was seasoned well. Being breast I’m always conscious of it being dry, I’m a thigh girl after all. This wasn’t the case, my chicken was still juicy and mighty delicious with the seasoning. To top it off there was house made coleslaw rocket and cucumber relish. The bun? Soft toasted brioche bun. Definitely satisfied my cravings and I felt somewhat healthier? It came with corn chips instead of fries, even healthier. Winning!
The menu isn’t reinventing the wheel but it’s fresh and done nicely with good ingredients. There’s enough variety plus a whole page dedicated to vegans and another to kids which is pretty considerate. We both enjoyed our breakfast and received great service from the staff that day but I think Wicket might be the happiest customer wondering where that magic bacon came from!
