If you are vegetarian or vegan and have felt that Adelaide lacks in the fast food department then you may be in luck. The interstate chain Lord of the Fries has opened up in Hindley Street to fill that gap. They have on offer vegie burgers with a variety of sauces, fries, chips (hot), sweet potato fries, onion rings and soy nuggets. I was invited to try the goods and see what we have been potentially missing out on here in SA.
The slider I tried was ‘The Spicy’ that comprised of a veggie patty, cheese, onion and lettuce topped with a spicy tomato sauce, jalapenos and chilli mayo. Being a veg patty it always will be dry to a meat eater but the chilli kick and flavour was quite nice.
The fries were my most anticipated target as for a place with fries in its business name this should be top priority! Once I had tried them I found that the crispness was there though the salt level too high for me and I normally don’t mind the salt. At least the drinks will sell well, a lesson I learnt from playing the Sim Theme park game. My grandma used to do her chips like that so that brought a memory back for me. Sweet potato fries is where it’s at in my opinion. Having these orange little fried sticks had me munching away happy.
Ling is a fan of the good old onion ring so I wanted to find a good one. The flavour was not bad and generally on par with what you would expect. I found they had not been shaken off enough after frying as mine were quite greasy and lacked that crunch. To couple any fast food meal there are always chicken nuggets but in this case soy nuggets. My meat eater curiosity wanted to see how close they come to real meat. The nuggets were quite sweet which I wasn’t expecting and sort of tasted like chicken.
Finishing up we were served some vegan chocolate that they sell on site to cater for that sweet tooth. In summary I think this will do quite well as there is a large vegetarian and vegan community here in Adelaide. I don’t think it’s going to convert any meat eaters but variety is the spice of life and always better to have more choice!
Thank you to all involved for the invite and introduction to this franchise.
