As the saying goes, seek and you shall find. There’s a little hidden gem on Austin Street in the CBD that is most certainly worth finding. Hide ‘n’ Seek Thai Bar brings you modern fusion North-Eastern Thai street food. Situated where Austin & Austin used to be, they have turned up the lights a bit and changed the colour scheme a little to make it more restaurant like. It’s not so much a bar as Austin & Austin was. It’s still colourful and vibrant and even a bit playful.
The first thing we ordered were the Sticky Chicken Wings. Already given the nod of approval by a fellow foodie, it received a huge nod from us too with that delicious sticky sweet, tangy chilli sauce. The kaffir lime and coriander just made it all the more fragrant. A must order. We also shared a plate of baked Scallops with fragrant herb crust.
The star of the night was none other than their signature dish – Gai Yang. These herb marinated free range chicken skewers with nam jim jaw were flavour packed, perfectly grilled, juicy and tender with every bite. Between the chicken wings and these skewers I’m pretty happy to keep ordering them.
Hide ‘n’ Seek also has special sharing platters on their menu. After all, food is best enjoyed with variety and sharing. We decided on a Som Tum Platter which came with pork crackling, pork sausage, soft boiled egg, crunchy green beans, cabbage, okra and broccoli, rice vermicelli noodes and of course som tum in the middle. An appetizing bowl of Thai papaya salad. It was quite a delight to slowly munch away at this combination as we discussed matters of world peace! (not really)
Just when we felt like we couldn’t eat anymore, the lovely chef brought out an amazing bowl (tom yum pot) of desserts. She wanted to showcase what they were about with a fusion of European pastries, fresh fruits and Thai flavours. The danishes and pastries were made in house and tasted great. Also part of dessert were plenty of fresh strawberries, pandan anglaise, basil seeds and house made coconut ice cream. It was absolutely delightful and very generous of them. Disclaimer – this dessert was on the house. They had only recently opened at the time and identified us as foodies hence wanting to introduce more of what they have to offer. I don’t think this exact item is available on the menu but I wouldn’t be surprised if you have a group they can whip something up on request.
Our dining experience was delightful, these dishes that we had we enjoyed very much. Service was top notch with friendly smiling faces ready to help in an instant. They were also very patient and helpful in explaining any dishes we didn’t understand or weren’t sure about. I came to find out they also do a breakfast menu from 7am-3pm. This may involve Pork Belly Omelette though I’ve been told the Hide n Seek Fried Egg is the star. Looks like I’ll just have to come back and find out for myself.
