If you want good pasta Ruby Red Flamingo will deliver the ultimate satisfaction every time. There’s often a wait so I’d pick weekdays and turn up early, like 6pm. Despite having ample seating, and being open for this long they still fill their seats all the time. That speaks volumes about how good it is and how much people love the dining experience. The menu is chalkboards on the wall around you while the specials are brought to you on another chalk board. Trust me when I say you will have trouble deciding.
I’ve put off writing about this for a while partially because the photos don’t come out good and they doesn’t do it justice. I don’t exactly want to be blinding fellow diners with flash every 5 seconds. Nonetheless all these photos I’ve accumulated need to be released into the world so here they are, and just trust me that they taste so good as grainy as the photos look.
I’ve had their Manzo Tonnato which blew me away with tender thinly sliced scotch fillet topped with tuna sauce. I must admit I wasn’t convinced with tuna sauce, especially seafood-weary Mr Foodie but it was really delicious. We also fell to the temptation of that day’s special of Polenta which came with beef mince and creamed spinach. So simple yet so delicious. With both dishes they were generous with the sauce.
Of course I ordered a Spaghetti Granchio at some point, it is after all my favourite dish. Very much to my liking it was fresh, the crab meet was sweet and cooked just right, cherry tomatoes were juicy bursts of flavour while the chilli tickles the tastebuds just that bit more. A great dish. We’ve also tried another daily special of Pappardelle with Lamb Ragu which turned out to be absolutely delicious. This was 100% Mr Foodie’s perfect dish.
I would generally almost never order a vegetarian dish but this Cannelloni Verdi is to die for. And the vegetarian part is just fine. Filled with spinach, pumpkin and mushroom then served in napolitana sauce with melted parmesan over the top it was divine. So creamy, so smooth, so flavoursome.
While on my seafood craze I went for a Mezze Maniche which comes with prawns, pancetta, saffron, zucchini and chilli. I’ve actually never had zucchini in a pasta, really. But it was great! I can be fussy with prawns but these were succulent and fresh.
The only desserts we’ve tried are their chocolate fondant with a lava centre and the tiramisu. The Chocolate fondant is decent but the tiramisu might just be too authentic for me…possibly. Only because I saw this a lot on menus in Italy. It’s a little bit of savoiardi biscuit with a whole ramekin of mascarpone and cream. I like mine with a bit more biscuit to it.
All the pastas were always cooked al dente and all the meats and seafood cooked perfectly. It’s great, honest food without being pretentious. The meals are whole and comforting and the quality is that of a 5 star restaurant. The only thing I will say is the dessert department is lacking but being in North Adelaide options are aplenty if you fancy something nicer for sweets.
