I didn’t have much encounter with Middle Eastern food in Malaysia but if there’s one thing I know now, I love their chargrilled meats and rice pilafs/palaw. One afternoon out and about running errands we stopped by Safa Kebab House. You will find many of these kebab houses around Adelaide, all offering choices of whole grilled chicken, koftas and kebabs with flatbread or rice. I’m always tempted by a grilled whole chicken. As much as fillets are easy to eat, there’s nothing like the flavour you get when cooking chicken with the bone in. Same applies for Chinese food. Chicken on bone adds much better flavour to the dish. Alas I have a fussy husband so it’s a bit lack-lustre sometimes. Still good but not the same.
It’s a great value lunch really. If you’re like Mr Foodie then flatbread is the go. A half Grilled Chicken with salad and naan will only set you back $8.00. I wanted rice, not just any rice but their Afghan Kabuli Palaw. A fragrant oiled rice with carrots and sultanas. My dish came to $12 and the portion is big. I love the minted yoghurt sauce and the tomato chilli sauce they serve it with. It’s a nice addition of flavour and tang. The chicken was grilled perfectly with the delicious flavours infused.
If you fancy a saucy curry dish try their Kufta Korma. Spiced lamb meatballs are cooked in a delicious tomato based chickpea curry sauce. This comes with naan and their Afghan naan is a big piece of flatbread. Roll the meatball in or just tear it off and keep dipping into the curry sauce.
Mr Foodie loving his meat boneless went for a combination of 3 spits – Lamb pieces, Lamb mince and Chicken. Each of them were delicious, well seasoned with beautiful spices. Tender and succulent, it made this non-lamb lover enjoy lamb. Of course he had his with bread.
It was a pretty satisfying lunch stop. Worse still it was hard to continue the day after that. We were so full all we wanted to do was have a siesta! Having said that, I enjoyed the flavours and might just be on the lookout for more Middle Eastern kebab shops in the future.
