La Moka is one of those places that remind you of Italy. A little hole in the wall on Peel Street with a bright yellow door you cannot miss. There are small tables outside and even a bar along the window. Quite the perfect pit stop for a coffee, drinks and nibbles.
La Moka is a coffee and aperitivo bar and their coffee is the specialty. On weekdays they open 7.30am-5pm but stay open late on Thursday and Friday nights, perfect for the weekend wind down (and wine down). Being a CBD spot they also serve breakfast, lunch and sweet treats. You can start your day with things like ham and cheese croissant or egg and prosciutto roll then pop in for a piadina, focaccia or ciabatta roll at lunch. Something heavier? There’s lasagna.
We found ourselves a table upstairs and decided on a platter to share. It was after all Friday evening and we were just about to meet up with some friends for a show. I’ve been told they do amazing cocktails here but we were pretty happy with the very good coffee at that stage. They’ve just made it on the list of 5 Espresso Martinis you must try so there’s the best of both worlds.
They do meat, mixed and cheese platters around the $25-$30 mark. We had The Antipasto Platter with 2 cured meats, 2 cheeses, marinated vegetables, fruit, olives, bruchetta, crackers, grissini and salsa. It was perfect. Even more perfect was the sight of this young gentleman bringing us extra bread because they thought what was on the board might not be enough. Seriously, Italians understand carb needs. So many places give you cheese platters with insufficient crackers.
La Moka, you are so very charming I think I will be back soon.
