Paint a picture of a little girl’s paradise with unicorns and rainbows. Rainbows so brightly coloured it eludes eternal positivity and happiness. Bright colours that are spilling into food today. Maybe the vendors want to draw on that same bright happy emotion. The colour of food has always been something I’m a little particular about. While there are natural colouring and food dyes, bright colours often put me off. Pastels however seem more believable…maybe. Perhaps it’s something subconsciously ingrained from mum, but it just seems unnatural to me.
I remember a discussion on the colour blue, the brighter shades. That it suppresses appetites and doesn’t make for a good plate colour (unless you’re on a diet). That there is no naturally occurring blue food in the world. Even blueberries are purple really. The idea of blue food is enough to turn my stomach, as visually stunning as it may be. Add to that six other bright colours of the rainbow and it looks like crayons and Play-Doh which brings me to the first rainbow food.
A craze that started in Brooklyn at a Bagel store. Apparently the demand was ridiculously high for it. I’m sure I made something like that when I was young….with Play-Doh. Although, did someone say Play-Doh is edible?
Happy Birthday to you….Happy Birthday to you…..here’s a cake that blends in with confetti!
More Rainbow Cake (Cheesecake)
Ain’t that pretty.
When in Vegas…..The latest to join the rainbow train. While very creative and clever I’m not so sure I would want this surprise in my coffee.
Then again, I’m the sort of person who takes the icing off a cake, throws Hundreds and Thousands out and wouldn’t touch fairy bread or a beesting. I didn’t even eat the icing on my wedding cake. I do turn a blind eye to one thing though, Ais Kacang – shaved ice with red syrup. Although that’s just the way the dish comes, if they omitted the red syrup it actually wouldn’t be an issue to me at all. Besides, not all of them come with bright red syrup.
What about you? Have you tried any rainbow foods? Do you find it appetizing?
