I may be Asian but I’ve never had an obsession with “Kawaii” things nor understood it. When Hello Kitty Cafe first opened in Adelaide, lo and behold it was in Chinatown, unsurprisingly. My friends overseas seemed to find out about it before I did. I had quite honestly never planned nor intended to set foot in there at any point. UNTIL…….a visitor from Malaysia who had the biggest crush on Hello Kitty was too ecstatic about it for me to be a bad host. So I played a good host, even bought half price Scoopon vouchers so she could have all the Hello Kitty goodness she wanted. I walked in with a half smile watching her excitement with the hidden expectation of a gimmick dessert cafe. I, Ling, admit I was wrong.
|Hello Kitty welcomes you|
The Kawaii continues with Hello Kitty merchandise at every turn, beautifully packaged in true Asian style with precision and high visual appeal. Meanwhile my guest was in euphoria, she might as well be at Disneyland. It was actually pretty cute watching her. The cake counter was indeed rather appealing as every menu item in the cafe incorporates Hello Kitty’s face in it somehow. Waffles are in the shape of Kitty’s head, our hot chocolates came with Kitty’s eyes whiskers and bow, cakes have Hello Kitty printed chocolate discs on them and cocoa powder dusting shaped Hello Kitty faces. Even the macarons are Hello Kitty shaped. I had a group and many Scoopon vouchers so we ordered to our hearts’ content.
There were a couple of iced mochas at the table with a pretty little pink sugar bow. The iced mocha was actually pretty delicious. Their hot chocolate fared well too. In full respect of a food blogger (mua), everyone patiently waited for the full order to arrive before taking this epic picture of too many cakes for too little people.
|Hello Kitty Summer Passion $7.50|
Inside the cafe Hello Kitty confronts you everywhere. When you look in the mirror your face is “Kitty-fied” with whiskers and a bow but ultimately I would come back for a drink and one of these cakes or tarts so to Miss fan-girl thank you for dragging me in here.
My top 3? Green Apple Mousse, Green Tea Cake and Lime Coconut Cheesecake.
