On another rare occasion of us being in the Adelaide CBD during a weekday, we decided to hit Luigi Delicatessen on Flinders Street which came highly recommended by a few. These guys only open Monday to Friday so we grabbed the opportunity to lunch here when the chance presented itself.
Iced coffees always tempt me at lunch time so c’est la vie! A good iced coffee, even better. Luigi’s opens from 7am to 5pm every weekday so it gets the breakfast before work (or working breakfast meeting) and office lunch crowds. Seating is limited but we got there just before office lunch hour so we nabbed a table outside. The menu is simple, it’s on the board or it’s in the display cabinet serving up paninis, foccaccias, bagels, pastries and everything you expect from a deli. While that all looks delicious, I think the real gem is on the blackboard – the pasta menu.
Spaghetti with Crab
It was a no brainer for me to order Spaghetti with Crab. Food came out reasonably fast so they’ve obviously got it down pat how to work the lunch rush. The spaghetti was fantastic, cooked al-dente, delicious sauce with a good amount of shredded crab. Garnished with a pretty basil leaf that made my life easier photographing it, this pasta is a must try. Very tasty.
Penne Alla Panna
Mr Foodie went for Penne Alla Panna, a creamy pasta dish with mushrooms and ham. Again Luigi deliviered with a flavoursome pasta with a decent amount of mushrooms and ham. Pasta cooked al-dente once more. In the past we have had creamy pasta dishes that were bland, fatty and just tasted like cream. Some were dry and lacking sauce while others really skimped on the ingredients. Luigi’s was nothing like that, it was good. It is an example of how good pasta should be.
We didn’t have the chance to meet the man himself but I have been told service is generally very friendly and personable there and he may even be willing to whip up something off the menu for you. If you don’t fancy pasta they offer eggplant parmigianna, chicken salad, antipasto and bruschetta as well but if you like crab pasta especially, you must try this one. Luigi won’t disappoint. If only they opened on the weekends too!
