Following on from my New Zealand adventure, I met Speight’s 5 Malt Old Dark.Speight’s brewery is located in Dunedin, New Zealand on Rattray St where they set up shop back in 1876. I enjoyed this beer on tap while in Waitomo, New Zealand and it was the shiny moon for the end of our day.
If I were on the South Island I would have graced myself with a visit to the brewery itself but there is always next time. This is a mighty, dark, malty beer with the malt flavour dominating the taste buds. A hint of caramel seeps through with roasted aromas.
An easy beer to drink with medium carbonation, smooth body and only 4% strength. Has good retention for the head with a clear brown body with little lace left behind. Overall a nice dark ale that can be drunk all night and keep you interested in the subtle flavours around the massive malt body. I coupled this with a great hearty lamb stew on a cold night which went together like Han Solo and Chewbacca!
