This was the launch for Adelaide’s own Malt Fiction ’13’ beer at The Laneway Bar in the city. The 13 refers to the little amount of wheat added as Jared came from a family of bakers hence the reference to a baker’s dozen. The label Malt Fiction and the girl on the label plays in parody to the popular movie Pulp Fiction. The launch took place on Friday 13th which was a perfect tie in to the name of this pale ale.
The beer itself came in at 4.5% alcohol and was served in bottles though we were told you would be able to pick up more notes of flavour from a glass. The beer for me was missing a punch to the flavour though I am a bit biased as I prefer a stronger tasting beer. The flavours that did come through were both melon and lemon which would play in well for a summer day brewski. The carbonation was medium which is good to see for a Pale. You should also know that Malt Fiction uses 100% Australian summer hops.
The launch included a game of chance at the door in which if you roll a 13 with three dice provided you would win a prize. I rolled a 4 and thus never got the reveal of this carrot on a stick. There were girls in yellow to match the label of the beer and a brief speech from the brewers fell towards the end from two of the three owners Jared Birbeck, Peter Lynn and Antony Tropeano.
Overall a nice venue for a launch with a good feel and atmosphere and the very first time I have been served a beer out of a briefcase!
