It’s no secret we love Benny’s American Takeaway quietly tucked away in Blackwood, local enough for us to indulge in their hot wings, PB & J shakes and crispy chicken tacos perhaps a little too often. I’m sure they’re not complaining. Craig and Michael have been welcoming, friendly and enthusiastic from day one about their American food venture. I was invited to their recent VIP night to coincide with the launch of new menu items and 7 night trading. I love attending their VIP nights, it’s always friendly and fun and it’s so close to home! Now really, there’s no excuse not to go is there?
We arrived really hoping to get a seat inside only because it was freezing but looks like they’ve already taken that into consideration and split the VIP night into two sessions. We actually bumped into an old friend who’d won the VIP night invite competition. Here’s a tip, not saying it’s a guarantee to happen again but I’d follow them on Facebook and keep an eye out on VIP night competitions. They’ve done it for every VIP night so far, just saying, you might be the next lucky one. A table was just clearing so we sat down and made that our food fort. My friend is not a food blogger but he is a photographer who also happens to love food very much, he is after all from Penang. Then the food started rolling in.
First up is one of their new dogs. They’ve also changed the sausage for their hot dogs and I’m telling you it’s amazing. Michael called it a cross between a Kransky and a Vienna, I called it friggin’ delicious. This one came with Camembert, Bacon and Mustard. Gobble gobble gobble, gone. It’s a great combination if you like Camembert.
Next we got the Samurai Dog – Pickled Ginger, Wasabi, Mayo and Crushed Wasabi Peas. This was very intriguing and I was very pleasantly surprised by it. It was actually my favourite combo that night. The Wasabi they use it not super strong and not overpowering like those that make your nose burn from the top. The Wasabi peas gave it a nice crunch and pickled ginger is something I can eat all day. Japanese mayo is one of the best in the world. I’m really surprised it worked in a hotdog with the Kransky-Vienna sausage on a soft white bun but it did, and splendidly.
The headliner at this VIP night was….. *drum roll*……. Buffalo Wings. FINALLY!!!!! Do you know how hard it is to get buffalo wings in my area, virtually non-existent until now. Michael is my new favourite person. Benny’s have their buffalo sauce ready to go on the menu and it’s delicious. I’m used to super saucy messy wings but their fried coated wings just absorb the sauce to give every bite a tangy spicy deliciousness. It’s appetizing and too easy to polish off a pile (cue heavy breathing).
I was ready to wave the white flag when they brought out these Festival Hot Dogs. Really? Why you torture me so baaaaad. Onion rings man, you know I couldn’t say no! Provolone cheese, Bacon, BBQ sauce and Onion Rings. The onion rings were crispy and the batter held its shape well. I ate one onion ring on its own and the second, I squashed into the hot dog. Noms. Nom nom nom nom nom. It’s a tasty saucy hot dog.
Once again we enjoyed the hospitality at Benny’s as we peel ourselves off the chair and roll ourselves out the door. I’m really excited I can get buffalo wings there now. Benny’s is now open seven nights a week offering buffalo wings and new hot dogs on the menu.
